The coaching process as outlined below is a fluid process. You may enter it at different phases and go back and forth between phases. This outline is intended to provide a framework for what can occur in the coaching process. The outline is not meant to be a linear plan, and time will vary according to an individual's needs and commitment.


Phase 1: Getting Started

  • Discuss background and history
  • Define expectations of coaching relationship
  • Define coaching objectives
  • Establish our relationship by getting to know each other
  • Assess where you are now
  • Introduce the Cycle of Renewal: a model for change and transition

Phase 2: Explore

  • Define purpose, values and vision
  • Identify gifts, talents, skills and strengths
  • Assess preferred styles/approaches
  • Identify priorities for the future
  • Identify obstacles and strategies to overcome them
  • Establish criteria for future (financial, lifestyle, relationship, career, health, etc.
  • Research possible options, gather data from a variety of sources

Phase 3: Claim the Future

  • Explore tasks and next steps
  • Prioritize tasks
  • Gather necessary information to move forward
  • Identify obstacles, and strategies to overcome them
  • Phase 4: Reaching Your Goals
  • Develop a specific plan with actions and timeframes
  • Take action based on the plan; measure and monitor progress
  • Develop support systems to sustain momentum
  • Identify obstacles, and strategies to overcome them
